As any significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
